The Secret of Success

As in any Harvest Moon or Rune Factory game, giving people gifts that they like is the key to social success. You will see how much an individual likes a gift not only by the icon that appears overhead when the gift is accepted but by the verbal response. For a Most Favourite Gift you will see the icon of floating red hearts. For a Gift the individual likes, you will see a musical note above his/her head. For one that is disliked, cross hurt (a cross icon). Unlike other Harvest Moon games, however, it appears that Friendship Levels do not decrease if you give a disliked gift to a person.
Specific Events or Memories are triggered in many cases only when a specific Heart or Friendship Level is attained. You will see a total of five musical notes next to any individual's names. They fill with red as their Friendship Level increases. A Most Favourite will fill a musical note faster than a Gift that is simply liked.
Your Encyclopedia

There is an entry for each Character in your Encyclopedia that ultimately will give his/her Birthday, 'Likes' in the form of Most Favourite Gifts and 'Dislikes'. In order for these entries to be completed, you must speak to the individual on his/her birthday, give the individual a Most Favourite Item AND give the individual a Gift he/she dislikes.
Unfortunately, although a Disliked Gift will not lower friendship levels, you only can give one gift per day in this game, so when you give a disliked Gift, that prohibits you from increasing Friendship Level that day. Obviously there is no time limit to the completion of the Encyclopedia, however, so you can wait until you have raised levels high enough to have experienced all Friendship Events in the form of Memories for any Character before giving the items he/she dislikes.
Note that Tabitha basically will tell you quite freely what each of the Characters dislikes. On the day of the Flower Festival, she will tell you the Flower each Character would prefer to receive on this Festival.
Birthdays

Simply speaking to an individual on his/her birthday for the first time will trigger a Memory accompanies by an item or group of items. Giving a Most Favourite or Liked Item will add to Friendship Level.
There is a section of your Encyclopedia that is devoted to all Characters. As you gain in knowledge and friendship, their Birthdays, Likes and Dislikes will be entered under their names. I think you have to speak to an individual on his/her birthday to have that information entered as the only birthday that is entered so far on 8 Spring is Sam's Birthday. As for Likes and Dislkes, I believe these are restricted to 'Most Favourites' for the Likes as only the Characters who have been given an item that elicits the blossoming of red hearts has been entered in my Encyclopedia.
Heart Events

The first heart event occurs usually when the individual reaches 1 Musical Note. It will be triggered at a specific location. In a few cases, it only can be triggered on specific days. Note here that '1 Musical Note' is an approximate level. The actual Level requirement is a point total that you cannot see. Every Gift is worth a specific number of Points in Harvest Moon. All you can see however are the little musical notes filled with red. The Character actually must be a little ABOVE 1 Musical Note for the first Friendship/Heart Event to trigger.
The second heart Event occurs usually when the individual reaches 1 1/2 Musical Notes.
Flower Festival

Every Character has a favourite flower for the Flower Festival. Tabitha will disclose these as she discloses all the items that people dislike as well as giving the next day's weather and other tips on successful gift-giving.
