Shops in Seeds of Memories usually have three diferent tabs where you will find different types of items. If you do not access all three, you may miss some important items!
In any Harvest Moon game, you are encouraged to spend your Gold (cash, not Ore!) in the various shops and stands. After all, your goal is not only to restore your own farm but to restore the vitality of the land in general, which includes the general economy.
Some items must be unlocked by meeting specific requirements. For example, Gareth will speak at the very start of the advisability of storing your excess items in a Refrigerator and Drawer, but these items will not be available initially. My own instinct is that you will need to upgrade your initial small house to the Big House in order to be able to obtain a Refrigerator and Drawer. This almost always is the case in any Harvest Moon game. The ability to take Bobcat home as your pet also requires the upgrade to Big House and I think you will be able to purshase a Dog from Hunter only when that same requirement is met. The Big House upgrade costs 85,000G and you will need to give Brutust 40 Hardwood, 5 Mithril and 10 Glass as well. Note here that these are processed items that must be made BY Brutus. To make one piece of Mithril requires 3 Mithril Ore as does any processed Metal. Glass requires 3 pieces of Glass Material to make. Gems on the other hand require only 1 piece for processing. In other words, you will need a total of 15 Mithril Ore to make 5 Mithril and 30 Glass Material to make 10 Glass.
